Vasectomy Reversals

By Jason Montag

These days science is booming. Scientists are developing and honing procedures that were once difficult and risky and highly unreliable. Previously if a man had a vasectomy and then remarried or just changed his mind and wanted to have children he was basically out of luck. No longer is the idea of reversing a vasectomy a pipe dream. A man that wants to turn back the hands of time to before he had his vasectomy can undergo a vasectomy reversal.

When the procedure of vasectomy reversal was first developed the procedure was a lot more hit and miss, with a whole lot of misses. Nowadays the vasectomy reversal is a relatively successful procedure for a man to undergo. There are a few factors that contribute to the success rate of a vasectomy reversal so the more of these factors that are in line the higher the rate of success. No matter how high the success rate can climb there is never a 100% success rate and there are no guarantees that the vasectomy reversal will actually lead to the birth of a new child.

One pretty large factor of whether or not a vasectomy reversal will produce a child is the length of time since the man had his vasectomy. The shorter the window between the vasectomy and vasectomy reversal the more likely it is that the procedure will be effective. Though it is a good indicator the length of time is not a definite determining factor since there are men that have successful vasectomy reversals after decades of time has elapsed since their original vasectomy. Some other factors can be the length of vas deferens on the testicle side left over from the vasectomy and a small vas deferens gap are two of the many good indicators.

Consult with your doctor and allow them to run the necessary tests and conduct the necessary exams to determine the odds of your vasectomy reversal joining the ranks of successful child producing vasectomy reversals.

I had a vescetomy in 1996 and in 2002 began suffering from symptoms of PPA (dementia). The theory is that my sperm are contacting my blood and anti-sperm anti-bodies are affecting my brain. HOW ARE THE SPERM COMING INTO CONTACT WITH MY BLOOD? IS THERE A LEAK IN THE PROXIMAL END OF ME VASECTOMY? IS THERE SURGERY TO CHECK ON THIS?

But due to the fact we knew we nolong wanted children, but still wanted to try to be a family I had my tubes stabled in May of 2003 and he had a vas in June of 2003. I had a vas in 1975. I was wondering about a reversal. I heard or read somewhere that a vasectomy has negative consequences. Is that true. I would only consider a reversal if a vas resulted in a negative consequence.

I had a vasectomy 20 years ago. Since that procdure, ejaculation during intercourse is not so exciting as it used to be. Do you think the absence of the sperm is causing that problem? Do you think a reversal will bring back the excitement?
    Please respond!

My question is the same as many above. My husband had a vasectamy and we now would love to have another child. We’ve looked into having it reversed, and it’s very expensive. Is there a way to get his sperm and inject it into me w/o the reversal? And what is the cost of this if possible?

Hi they can retreive sperm dirrectly from the mans tesicles. (We are looking into it) What is the cost of pregnancy? I don’t understand that question! In order for a pregnancy to happen both your husband and you have to have no fertility issues other wise you will have to see a fertility dr!

My wife and I are looking for a reversal asap at a local place in kansas. We need low cost,or payment plans. And are there any insurances that pay for the procedure or at least part of it.

  36. By Dr. Thomas Sommesr on Mar 7, 2010 | Reply

Lots of questions here: In reverse order…

Mr. Byers: No insurance pays for this. Our price is kept low since we consider this a Ministry. Our cost is $2800 which is pretty much all inclusive of costs. We are in St. Louis. We (and no one to my knowledge) do not accept payment plans. We do, however, take credit cards.

Ann: You are likely talking about Dr. Roeder – he is a partner of Dr. Leverett. I think his fees just jumped to $3000, but he is a good man and a good surgeon from what I have heard. I only met him briefly, but Dr. Leverett thinks highly of him.

Chel and Rosalie: You are describing ICIS – essentially the sperm is extracted with a needle, but then the sperm has to be combined with your egg during IVF. There is not nearly enough sperm for artificial insemination from the needle extraction.

    Hope this helps!

My fiance had a vaso 7 years ago. He has two children and I have none. Is there a test that could tell us if he has viable sperm before we get the reversal? I have looked all over the internet for the answer to this question and can’t seem to find it.
