Tummy Tuck Cosmetic Surgery

 by: T.Going

Abdominoplasty is also known as a ‘tummy tuck’ procedure that is used to reshape and firm the abdomen. This procedure involves removing excess fat and skin from the center of the lower abdomen in order to tighten the muscles of the abdomen wall. Generally this procedure is performed on women and people who have abdominal fat deposits that won’t respond to diet and exercise.

A complete abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) procedure is performed by creating a small incision from one hip to the next (just above the pubic area). After this, another cut is made to free the surrounding skin away from the navel. The skin is detached from the abdomen wall which will reveal the muscles. The skin is then reattached and a new hole for the navel is created and stitched into place.

When preparing for your surgery it is best to listen to all of the instructions your surgeon gives you. This will most likely include guidelines on eating, drinking, smoking and what medications to take. Overexposure to the sun before surgery can slow down the time it takes to heal. Smoking is also not recommended for at least a week before your surgery.

After the surgery has been completed your abdomen will probably feel swollen and you will most likely undergo some pain and discomfort. Your doctor will provide you with medication to help you out during this time. Some people are able to return to work within two weeks of the procedure, while others take 3-4 weeks. Minor exercise will help you heal better, and it is recommended to start an exercise program to reduce swelling. Expect your scars to last for around 9-12 months after the procedure. While these scars will never disappear completely, most will not show under clothing and even bathing suits.

i had a tubual ligation, and since then i am getting recurrent hernias, i did some research and saw that if u have a tummy tuck with the hernia repair it helps streghthen the muscles, and thus helping to prevent recurrent hernias. my sisters also have had numerous procedures for this and even with the mesh the hernia came back, and one sister is quite small is this true?

Are you able to get a tummy=tuck if you are a diebetic? Is it safe? What about infection and healing like you should? I heard of someone dying, from infection after getting a tummy-tuck. And is it better to lose weight if you need to before getting the tummy-tuck? Please reply with the answer. Thank YOU…Sherrie Holland

Before anyone has any cosmetic surgery make sure he is certified by the american Board of Plastic surgeons. you can do this via the internet. A doctor who received his license in another country must be licensed here too. Do not rely on one doctor get 2 or three different consultations and ask questions. This is your body & life you are putting at risk in someone elses hands. Be very leary if a price is too too good to be true. Make sure the operating facility is certified too. Surgeons who can operate at a hospital is a better bet.

I just wanted to share, I am on week 2 post op tummy tuck. The results are already visible and are only going to get better. The only downside is the recovery. It does require limited activity and if you over do it, you will know and be set back. Biggest advice, if you are going to commit to do this be sure to be prepared to do exactly as the Dr. order post op. Best of luck to anyone wanting this done. It took me a year to think about it and commit to it, but I am happy with the results and look forward to them only getting better.

I had a tummy tuck in June. My Dr. informed me to get rid of the pockets of fat leftover I needed liposuction. I did that in November. Now it is January and while I look pretty good standing up, when I sit I still have rolls. I so wanted to not be embarrassed to “sit” in a swimsuit this summer and my stomach be flat. Please if you have experienced this, let me know. Does it get better? I have an appointment in a few weeks with my Dr. and I don’t want to go in blindsided. Thanks, Jane

I’m planning on asking for a tummy tuck as well. I’m currently dieting, hoping to lose 60 lbs. I’ve been overweight for years and my stomach skin was ruined from pregnancies – no collagen left in my skin for it to ’snap’ back after weight loss. But I am 56 and borderline diabetic. I’m hoping I’ll be a candidate. Has anyone in my age/health situation had one? Let me know how it went and what your recovery was like.

hi i have had 3 c sections 1994-2004-2008 i just recently had a full tummy tuck on jan.22 i find the initial pain was less with the tummy tuck but it has now been 1 week and the recovery is going to take a lot longer than i expected. i guess its because the incision is so much longer it goes completely from one side to the other and to me feels much more easier to come open then my c section incision. just make sure if you have children that you have more than help your really not able to lift or stretch.my tummy is gonna look great i can tell but if i knew it would be this big i would have waited because i miss holding my babies!! hope this helps.

just to answer some of the other questions…i live in montreal my full tummy tusk cost 7500$ 6000 for the surgeon 500 for the anesthetist then 1000 for the hospital fees. it is considered elective surgery no matter how bad your tummy is.ive looked at a lot of pictures and had not seen any one with a tummy that was as bad as mine, and i still had to pay for it and we have full coverage medicare!!!

hi dee im 35 but you would have a pre op appointment with a doctor(usually at the hospital where the surgeon would do the surgery) and they will let you know if you are a good candidate or not

I cannot stand up straight because I feel like I’m being pulled tighter and tighter from inside. I’m afraide because my doctor does’nt seem to care…he shows no compassion for me even though I am crying my eye’s out and I don’t want to be cut on any more. Is there anyone who can help me…tell me what to do? Is there anyone who has exsperienced what I am going through now…….please reply!

l had my tummy tuck done march 25/09 and although l have had 2 drains break through the skin along the insisions and one has stopped and the other is still going, my dr said that is was good that they are draining, althougt it is a pain in the butt.,,,the fluid is coming out and not staying in. And there isn’t that pressure in my tummy from the fluid anymore, which is a relief.
My only other issue is that someone told me to use the Johnson and Johnson Advanced Healing pads on my insisions, (had breast lift and lipo and tummy tuck) for me l found out that they are now good for me.. l’m having a reaction to them,, and all insisions are red and made my boobs swell up again, just when they were starting to soften up. So took them all off and the itching is starting to go away.. back to the polysporin…
Other than these couple of mishaps, l am loving my new tummy, not having that panni there is so kewl, Not missing that flab..
I did too have c-sections and l found this to be a walk in the breeze.. the only thing hurting still is where the lipo was done, that is tender, but getting better everyday. Best of luck for anyone who is thinking or doing it. Love my new tummy.

Hello. I am in Guadalajara Mexico and just had a full tummy tuck. I’m on my 8th day after surgery and recovering very well. The Doctor is a perfectionist and he did an awesome job. Even with the swelling in my first week, I could tell how great the results are. The full tummy tuck cost me only $3,600(U.S. Dollars). The company that arranged my surgery is called Airlift Inc. They provide a driver, a bed and breakfast where you stay and recover. The bed and bed and breakfast is only $40 a day and that includes 3 meals a day and any help that you need during your recovery. The driver takes you and back and forth to the doctor for post-op visits and that only cost $15 per visit. The 2-week stay here during recovery time plus surgery is probably only costing me $5000 total. I had a consultation with a Doctor in Walnut Creek California about a month before my visit here, and it was going to cost me over $10,000 for the surgery!!! So far, I am doing very well. The surgery included a lipo on both sides of the hip as well as a full tummy tuck!!! Check it out!!! I Will post here again in about a month to let you know how my recovery is going!!!!! I had a c-section about 24 years ago where they cut me up and down and I had so much excess skin around the scar tissue that turned into fat over the years I couldn’t stand it since I’m such and active person I don’t have an inch of fat on any other part of my body, I was always so depressed about the ugly skin around my abs. I am 45 years old and I would have to say this I am so happy I went through with this. And this is coming from a person who used to look down on any kind of plastic surgery. I love my new tummy!

I am currently researching options to weight loss surgeries. I had thought about the gastric bypass, but know that I don’t/won’t give up carbonated beverages after surgery. Instead, I have thought of a tummy tuck with liposuction and also getting my bat wing arms done at the same time. I 5′6″ and weigh 270 lbs. Any ideas, directions to web sites, information would be greatly appreciated.

My insurance will not cover any of the cost of plastic surgery or gastric bypass. I am looking to travel abroad to get the best price, but also want to be sure that I am going somewhere reputable and safe.

I went to two different doctors for consults before scheduling my tummy tuck.

The first doctor examined me, told me what he recommended and explained that he would be taking out my C-section scar and would try to take out my 7″ appendectomy scar which was above my panty line. He would also be doing lipo on my hips and upper abdomen. He would be using general anesthesia and I would need help with my kids for about two weeks. His price including the surgical center, anesthesia and follow up was $5250.

The second doctor examined me and told me exactly what the first doctor said. Except he said he’d be able to get out “most” of my appendectomy scar. He used an Avelar technique which would speed the healing process. He would be using sedation anesthesia and local anesthesia. He also recommended I get help with my kids (ages 6 & 2) for the first two weeks. His price (including the surgical center, anesthesia and follow up) was $9,000.

After scheduling childcare,I went with the first doctor for the surgery. My first thought upon waking up and feeling the pain/tightness was, “What the H*** did I just do to myself. Well, all I can do now is get through it.” Although there was more pain/tightness than I expected (10x worse than my previous C-sections), and the two drains to deal with (the first one came out after one week and the second at the end of the second week) the first two weeks went well. BTW, the drains are quite painful to “milk” and they pull whenever you try to put on any clothing. However, I do love the new look in my clothes even though I am still very swollen.

Then on week three (with me home alone with the kids while my husband is at work)the middle 6-7 inches of my incision reopened. A trip back to the doctor and I was shown how to dress my open wound to clean it out 2-3 times a day. Not pleasant. The doctor explained, “this sometimes happens”. Now in my sixth week post surgery, I am scheduled to go back into the operating room (valuim and local anesthesia this time) to have the wound cleaned out and re-stitched. The scar won’t be pretty, but none of it was pretty anyway. Although I am not very vain (I wore a bikini in my backyard around my friends with my 7″ appendectomy scar showing and my roll tucked into my bottoms.)I have to admit I was shocked when I first saw the scar post surgery. It goes literally from hip to hip. One side looked fine, the other hip (where he cut out my scar) looked like it had pleats in it. In addition, the middle of the scar under my new belly button also had pleats. The doctor swears it will eventually flatten out. Of course this is the doctor that also said it doesn’t hurt to take the drains out. Liar!

Would I do it over again or recommend it to my friends? Well, only if they go to doctor #2.

Had a tummy tuck 3 months ago and i too was excited about my results at the beginning – but I am now very discouraged because I still can’t fit into my clothes. I am very exercise oriented and I know i have been overdoing it – It is frustrating that I am swollen larger than before the surgery. My doctor said I am working out tooo much…So what exactly am i suppose to do – do nothing and gain weight…frustrated and right now wish zi had not had the surgery.
