Drug Rehab and Substance Abuse Treatment for Young Adults

By David Tang

For those who have never had substance abuse problems or family members who are addicts, consider yourselves lucky. Millions of families face the dark cloud of drug addiction via someone they love on a daily basis. The decision to get treatment, if not made by the addict, may very well have to be made by their loved ones. After all, the scope of drug addiction can have a reverberating effect on everyone who surrounds the addict. Consequences, if not dealt with directly, are apt to double in severity later on. However, once the decision to seek addiction treatment is arrived at, all parties involved can take comfort in knowing that their dedication will not go unrewarded. The path of healing has been laid out.

Good drug rehab centers have an array of resources that facilitate not only physical recovery from addiction–but the emotional and mental healing that is necessary as well. Some addicts complete drug rehab successfully, and then find that they’re unable to function in civil society because they lack the skills needed to lead a sober life. Some treatment centers emphasize job and education continuation so that addicts will return to these environments with ease once they leave the program. Alcohol and drug rehab centers are also effective in that they come complete with a support system, not only of medical and psychological specialists, but of peers who are recovering right along with you. Having these support systems will help recovering addicts learn how put themselves in healthy and sober social circles, rather than returning to the groups of people who enabled them before they sought treatment.

Once substance abuse reaches a certain degree of severity, you can be sure that there will be little chance of recovery if the addict is left to go it alone. The road to recovery has some treacherous terrain that can prove impassable if there’s no help along the way. Once an addict can make the decision to seek treatment and muster the dedication to follow it through, the healing process will come much more easily. The support system that will be provided by a good drug rehab facility will be leaps and bounds better than anything you’ll find on the streets. Extreme addiction makes the addict’s complete removal from their daily life absolutely necessary. Once that tough decision is reached, the addict can be certain that they are in good hands to the very end.

Access To Drug Rehab

Drug Rehab

Drug rehab is becoming more accessible to those that seek help.

With over 11,000 treatment facilities in the United States today along with a growing awareness in the media of the drug and alcohol problem, government and private centers are striving to help more and more people each year. Many of these centers have expanded their programs to suit more needs of the addicted and new treatment centers are opening almost weekly around the country.

Just take a look at the recent programming on television:

Intervention on A&E
Celebrity Rehab on VH1
True Life on MTV

Let alone all the exposure that many celebrities like Brittany Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Ritchie and Paris Hilton.

There is more and more attention being given to this mortal and traumatic issue of addiction. Help finding treatment is necessary.

Separation from drugs and alcohol is usually the first step in the treatment process. Newer modalities for detox are coming available in recent times. For most people, a comfortable medical detox is in store at many of these facilities. In addition, there are even protocols that cater to those who are unable to leave their jobs for long periods of time.

Residential treatment programs are the long-standing proven methods of substance abuse recovery. One of the rules of thumb to use when considering a treatment center is: “the longer the better.” Research has shown that the longer a person stays in a rehab, the better his/her chances for success in recovery from drugs and alcohol.

Outpatient treatment is becoming more common in several areas around the country. A multitude of these centers are usually available in every corner of every city. For those who cannot afford a residential program or simply cannot remove themselves from their home and/or work life, outpatient can serve as an excellent alternative.

Choosing The Right Drug Rehab Program

ByJonathan Huttner

Choosing a drug rehab program is a difficult decision. Nobody wants drug addiction to overtake their life to the point that drug rehab is the necessary step. However, the decision to go to drug rehab is something to look forward to, as it is the decision to rebuild a healthy life. Understanding what drug addiction entails and how it affects the user is important for healing substance abuse. As well as understanding drug addiction, knowing what drug rehab is will help the patient understand what he is going through and the purpose of drug rehab. Lastly, the type of drug rehab program is of vital importance for the patient. Understanding what a drug rehab program is and what a drug rehab program does, will make all the difference in the world. A drug rehab program, then, is the path that leads to an effective treatment of drug addiction. Research has shown that drug addiction is treatable. Research has not shown, and will not show, that addiction treatment is easy.

Which drug rehab program?

Educate yourself when choosing a drug rehab program. There are many different types of drug rehabs, varying in cost, length of stay and philosophy. Make sure that the drug rehab you choose makes sense to you. Look into the credentials of the drug rehab staff and the licenses of the drug rehab itself. Although a bit scary, entering drug rehab is an exciting time. It is the beginning of the end of your drug addiction and the beginning of a new life.

If you need help in locating an effective drug rehab program you can call the national drug rehab helpline at 1-800-511-9225 or go to www.recoveryconnection.org to locate a drug rehab program near you. Click here if you require help locating a drug rehab program that treats ==>dual diagnosis

Drug Addiction

Drug and alcohol treatment is something I have become familiar with over the last ten years of my life. Not only have I spent some years training and working in the field, but I myself have been through the gauntlet of drug and alcohol treatments more than once. While its certainly not a pleasurable experience, going through different forms of drug and alcohol treatment can teach you a lot about yourself. At almost five years of sobriety now, I feel almost grateful for the opportunity for personal growth.

When you’re in the midst of an addiction or have just had a relapse, opportunities for personal growth don’t really mean a whole lot. All you really want is the suffering to end. Unfortunately, the bad news is that the suffering does not stop with drug and alcohol treatment. If you’re familiar with treatment you already know this. Though you will of course begin to feel physically better once you start a treatment program, the emotional and mental distress can often get much worse before it gets better.

There isn’t any quick fix or pain free drug and alcohol treatment, so be prepared to do some work and be prepared to learn humility. While drug and alcohol treatment varies a lot these days, which is a good thing, they all have one thing in common; breaking down the old you and building up a new one. This sounds a little daunting and kind of scary, but don’t worry, its really not so bad. Essentially, the essence to every form of drug and alcohol treatment that I’m familiar with is training your brain to use new networks and patterns of thought instead of the old ones that got you into trouble.

Since the brain is involved in everything we do, there are a lot of routes one can take to retrain it and that is why drug and alcohol treatment is so varied. Writing, art, music, sports, exercise, prayer, meditation, counseling, and support groups are all common examples of tactics used in modern drug and alcohol treatment centers. To best improve your odds in getting and staying sober, it’s a good idea to try as many things as you can because what works for some people doesn’t work for others. Trying out a lot of new things boosts your chances of finding something you like.

In the end, drug and alcohol treatment is a personal battle, and it will be a unique experience for everyone. Therefore it’s very hard to make sweeping generalizations or to provide advice that’s sure to work. There is one Alcoholic Anonymous saying that stands out for me as summing up the key point in drug and alcohol treatment; “You don’t have to change anything, except everything.”

Alcohol Treatment

Alcohol Treatment

by Ray Gallagher

At some time, people who are addicted to alcohol may have to seek treatment, either on their own, with encouragement from their families, or because it is ordered by employers, the military, or the courts. There are many treatment options available, and as said previously, it depends on what type of circumstance exists requiring the alcoholic to seek treatment. Such options include meetings with others, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, or AA, individual counseling, outpatient treatment, inpatient treatment, medications, or a combination of treatment modalities, which is most common. Stopping cold turkey is also an option, but is usually not realistic, unless combined with a support environment like AA. People seeking alcohol treatment usually do so because they are at rock bottom, and many instances where alcohol has disrupted their lives and the lives of their loved ones has occurred. Treatment will not work unless the individual truly wants help.

Many alcohol treatment programs are based on the 12-step program, which is used in Alcoholics Anonymous. In this type of setting, alcoholics are encouraged to be open and share experiences, but are not required to do so. Tons of literature is available at these meetings for a nominal price or for a donation, and a variety of topics are discussed relating to the alcoholic’s individual situation. Those who are serious about quitting must seek out a sponsor, which will help them through their recovery process. This person is available to them in case they are having a weak moment or if they just need words of encouragement.

Alcohol treatment programs are designed to get the person back on track physically and emotionally, so that they can face their addiction and gain control of their lives. Self-esteem and self-worth is greatly distorted by the addiction, and treatment interventions include group and individual therapy to get at the root of the trauma which may have caused the cycle to begin in the first place. The alcoholic must discover what causes them to drink, why they can’t stop, and what counter measures they can use when these triggers occur. Recovering alcoholics may also benefit from prescribed medications, such as anti-depressants or anti-anxiety drugs to help them control they physical symptoms of withdrawal, which can only be prescribed by a medical doctor or psychiatrist.

Recovery takes time and with the proper support and motivation, alcoholics can be successful and remain alcohol-free for the rest of their lives. Often times the alcohol is replaced by another substance, but this is not always a bad thing. The most common is coffee or caffeine and cigarettes. Food is also another common vice, but as every person seeking treatment is told, one thing at a time. It is just not possible to conquer every issue at once. The most serious should be addressed first, then everything else will fall in place. Take one day at a time, one hour at a time, one minute at a time, this is the best recipe for long-term success.
