Scoliosis

Scoliosis: The Facts

In medical terms, the spinal cord is a thin, tubular bundle or network of nerves that act as the extension of the central nervous system. The spinal cord functions as the “transmission line” of neural messages from the brain to the rest of the body. The spinal cord is enclosed by the vertebral column, a bony structure that protects the nerves. Usually, the normal shape of the spinal cord would be an inverted ‘S.’ The bony covering of the spine also serves as a prop or structure that allows a person to stand upright and maintain over-all body balance.

Like other parts of the body, the spine is also prone to some diseases. One such disease is called scoliosis, a condition that involves the rotational and lateral curvature or deformity of the spine. According to U.S. health statistics, about 5 in 1,000 Americans have scoliosis or other spine-related problems such as congenital spine deformity, neuromuscular problems, and limb length inequality. Other ailments that are related to the spine and the central nervous system are spina bifida, cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy, and muscular dystrophy. About 80% of scoliosis cases are considered as idiopathic, meaning that the cause for the ailment is unknown. Idiopathic patients are separated into four distinguished categories, all based on the age of the person. The age range for infantile idiopathic patients is three years and under; juvenile idiopathic patients would be from three to nine years old; adolescent patients would be from ten to eighteen years of age; and the adult stage starts right after the individual’s skeletal maturity, which is usually at around 24 years old. Based on current data, it is safe to say that scoliosis can run in families, which means that a person may be prone to this disease if there are close members of his family that have the said ailment.

What are the visible signs of scoliosis? A person may have this spinal deformity if he exhibits a prominent, raised hip; uneven waist; different rib cage heights; different shoulder heights; a head that is not centered directly above the pelvis; skin changes on the spine, including hairy patches, color change, and dimples; and the leaning of the entire body to one particular side.

There are also severe cases of scoliosis that may require surgery. Spinal deformities that increase in progression, curves that bring pain on a regular basis, curves affecting physiological functions such as breathing, to name a few, are the situations that may require surgical treatment. Scoliosis surgery usually entails the procedure called spinal fusion. Although not all people with scoliosis needs surgery, it is essential to have a check up with an orthopedic doctor to mitigate the effects of scoliosis. The proper alignment of the spine is not only important for one’s posture but also for the proper transmission of neural impulses that are needed for good physical coordination.

Typically these show up age 10-12, maybe a little later in boys, generally associated with the adolescent “growth spurt”. The symptom of “prominent, raised hip” mentioned in this article is what we believe to be the main cause of most scolioses, not just a symptom. The medical people will call it “pelvic unleveling” but generally they don’t know how to correct it. In addition to a consult with an orthopedist where they will suggest you “wait and see”, try a local chiropractor and see what they think. You may be able to reduce the severity of the curvature, but time is short since he’s already 12. I recommend having all kids checked for proper pelvic alignment yearly from age 8-12 for girls and 9-13 for boys. Good luck and TRY CHIROPRACTIC FIRST! JCDC

My daughter was just diagnosed with scoliosis…15* and 9.5* curves. We see the orthopedic in 2 weeks. You seem to believe that sometimes chiropractors can fix this? When I manually move her ribs over slightly all hip discrepancy disapears (to the naked eye), don’t know what ex-rays would show.
How do I choose a good chiropractor? I have heard some bad stories.

I’m a 42 year old and just had test done saying I have scoliosis of the spine. I was injured at work causing nerve damage to the right arm (ulnar nerve) and for the last year I had been in a lot of pain. The nerve damage has caused my scoliosis. And my employer thinks its funny.

I’m 20 years old and I have had scoliosis since I was 2 years old. I have had 3 sugeries since i was 7 to 12 years old, to no success. my curve has gotten worse! I am married and I actually was able to become pregnant, carry full term, deliver naturally, and be able to care for my 13 month old daughter. something I was told that i would never be able to do. BUT… its not all great for me day in and day out. I have excruciating pain in my hips, back, neck, and shoulders everyday! Its very hard to sleep, to do any daily tasks really, I know the future doesnt look good for me because I have tried everything from sugery to braces to pain killers like percaset, and loratab and morphine, none are strong enough to kill the pain! I’m hopeful that maybe someday some one can help me and many others out there that have to live with this condition and all the pain that comes with it.

Hello. My name is Amy and I just found out today (8-18-08) that my 7 year old daughter has Scoliosis. It was hard for me to hear that. We go to the Doc. on Thursday(8-21) to find out more about it and what we are going to do. It never crossed my mind this is why she has been having back pain, why she can’t sleep, and on top of other things. She likes to play outside, but not for very long, because her back would start to hurt. The reason how we found out is that she went to the doc. for a sinus infection, then come out to take x-rays at the hospital. Some visit. I just hope it is not that bad of a case. The doc. said just a mild case of it. So I guess we will see on Thursday. Pray for her!!!!

I don’t really know where to post this so I will try here, cause I am too scared to go back to the doctor, but I was diagnosed with scol. in middle school and I also have a pectoral chest , I believe thats what its called…. basically my ribs stick out more in middle than outter sides and I have recently started to make some kind of progress by stretching my arms back and stickin my chest outward. I had hear a cracking sound when I first did this and it was one of those pains of good and bad, and over about a month I have got it to somewhat correct the ugly sight of my ribs, not fully but I definetly feel much better now than I ever have about it. I am 23 years old, I just wanted to get this out to someone and get some advise, the advise would be in response to a discomfort I have had last year or so almost like if I took a golf ball and stuck it inside my left lower ribcage, it doesnt hurt but is something that comes and goes, and just feels awkward… anyone have any advice besides seeing a doctor?

  13. By New Generation Son on Aug 19, 2008 | Reply

Sorry to post again I forgot to add, according to a doctor I have a spasmic muscle on my back along the left of my spinal cord…. the discomfort is directly in between that part of my ribcage… I know I am probably pissing in the wind but maybe I can get some help here?

Hey there, I feel the pain day and night, begining with my Spine and Aching outward through my Entire Body! You should not rule out Scholiosis, in fact, it gets worse with age and can begin affecting other body parts (lungs, nerveous system, heart).

Sorry, got thrown off while typing.i was diagnosed with Spondylolisthesis after becoming Temporarily Paralyzed and had to wait until someone came home to pick me up off the floor. All the result, doctors say, of a spinal injury. Yeah right, My Father has Scoliosis “hunch back”, I have been checked all my Life, been to chiropractor’s all my life too! Doctors and School Nurses never found anything until the 8th doctor i saw after being picked up off of the floor. He said I had “Slight Scoliosis” at the age of 32! So, Now It shows up as and Adult. As if that and the pain that came with it was not enough. In 2005 I Rolled, on Asphalt, A 600 pound plus 4×4 Yamaha Grizzly Quad! Crushing my Spine, Hairline Fractures, along with All my Vital Organs that were “Severely Bruised”. And Now, After 2yrs, I don’t even know if I can keep a job, unless it is at home. EVERYTHING HURTS FROM MY SPINE, RIBCAGE WHERE MY BRA WOULD BE(if i could wear one), ON OUT TO EVERY SINGLE JOINT IN MY ENTIRE BODY, ALONG WITH NUMBNESS IN MY LIMBS THAT COMES AND GOES! Can not stand for more than 10 or 15 min. and not more than 5min. in one spot. I have a terrific Chiropracter that picked me off the floor and had me walking in 20min. It is best to have surgery if your curvature is 45 degrees or more because if not corrected you run the risk of more serious health problems later. In 1983, I had a spinal fusion done with Harrington rods placed and I went on to have a relatively normal life giving birth to 4 sons.My only complaints are the ugly scar and I lean to one side when I walk(shoulders are uneven). It’s normal to be scared, just be pro-active and do what doctor thinks is best.

Hi my name is jai,i am 44yrs old and have a scoliosis with a very bad rotation,i was diagnosed in my early twenties after having severe hip pains for some time ,but was told by the surgeon at that time that it wasn’t as bad as some he had seen and he would not touch it, plus as i was already in my twenties it was too late too do anything about it anyway, when i asked him about the issues i would have as i got older i was told 2 exercise & drink milk.
I asked him about the rods they insert into the spine to straighten the curve and was told that i would’t be able to bend , i told him i didn’t care about that,my concern was with the problems i would have as i got older.
Sadly that time has arrived, for the pass yr i have been having unexplained pains in my neck ,shoulder ,back and chest , after months of visits to my DR, & referals i was finally sent to see an orthopaedic surgeon who did a complete set of test, the results, it was my scoliosis which was causing me all this pain,my curve is actually getting worst ,i have been recommended,to a physio therapist in an effort to strenghten my back muscles, but at this stage i really don’t have much hope of that helping ,but am willing to try anything.

Hi worried mother here,My 13 yr.daughter was just diagnosed with severe scoliosis with the spine curving side to side at 26 degrees and up and down at 45 degrees. Her shoulder blades stick off her back about 1 1/2 inches and come to a straight point. The doctor called it chicken wings,my problem is she has been this way for 2 yrs or better with me taking her to different doctors only to hear nothing was wrong with her back”she is just skinney or she has no fat on her back is what I always would hear.”but her back was always fine to hear the doctors say.She always says her back is hurting or she can’t breath very good Dr.said she has asthma. When she gets really upset she would quit breathing which her Dr.said has to do with her asthma.I found out about the scoliosis when she spent the weekend at a friends house and got hurt on and trampoline which caused swelling in the back, her Dr. was not in so we saw a new one who ordered x-rays right away becaused the back was curved. Why didn’t the other doctors see it? I saw it, others seen it but the doctors didn’t why…..Also I contacted her school to find out why the nurse didn’t see it only to be told they don’t check for it no more”They don’t check for it no more”What the hell are our children not important we were checked as children? So many questions and no answers. We have to take her to Children’s Hospital because the hospital in our small town won’t see her no more.Any ideas on what we should do?She will more then likely need to have surgury and we are scared to death.I have 6 children she is the only one who is curved I’m not curved and nither is my husband so why is she curved? Please help with any ideas you may have.

I just turned 30 and with having scoliosis, I am definitely beginning to feel my age. I have pain majority of the time, pain that is often ignored because I am so used to it. I am so tired at the end of the day. I have no children and I often wonder how I would manage if I did. I am considering back surgery, but not sure where to go for it. I am from a very small town and am limited to resources regarding good physicians. To all parents who are deciding if surgery is the right thing for a child, I highly recommend it. I have known about my scoliosis since I was six years old. I have worn almost every back brace made–including spinecor–the new flexible brace. I am from Louisisana and went to New York for it; it did releive some pain but no improvements. I have had 2 surgeries on both of my feet at age 7 and 12. I remember them and how bad it was. My parents didn’t make me go through back surgery because I had delt with enough. I wish soooooo bad at age 30 that they would have made me do it. As a kid, you don’t know as much and it’s not you making the decisions, it’s easier to handle that you have to do it–instead of as an adult making the decision yourself to do it. it’s like as a kid knowing you can get candy and not understanding how to pay for it or how much it is to work for it vs. as an adult you know how long you have to work and how much is needed to buy it. you learn how to sacrifice as an adult and you always find an excuse not to do the surgery or reasons to put it off vs. children are not able to do that. To sum it up, if I were a parent with a child with scoliosis debating surgery or not—-i wouldn’t even question it twice–it would be a definite!!! being 30 and working is not easy to make a decision on my own to have surgery. i have bills and as a child i didn’t have them or to worry about work. it is something my parents did not consider and now i wish they would have thought that far in advance. as a child, you have no bills, no work, and family support and assistance. Good luck to all. I have been there and now scared to death of surgery, but feel it’s my only option left. contact me if you want: haleymanuel@yahoo.com

Hi Rebecca, I am 42 years old and I have scoliosis. I had surgery when I was 12. I have what you call the herrington rod. It is a metal rod attched to my spine, I can’t bend my back it keeps me straight. I hear today they hae a flexable rod were you will be able to move around better. I will tell you, the surgery is major, but nessasary. It is not fun but you can do it. I had my surgery at Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas. That is a great hospital. I wish you luck and just remember you can get through this. It’s probably harder for your parents. You’ll be fine. The only thing I was told I would never be able to do is jump on a trampoline, so thats not that bad. Good Luck and God Bless. Cindy

Dear Gladys of the mother with the 13yr old with coliosis. I am 42 and I have scoliosis. I had to have surgery when I was 12. I had it at Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children. It is a free hospital but what you have to do is have a mason sign for your daughter. I really don’t know what that means after all these years. But if you would like more information about it you can email me at jewelspast@netzero.com I know a mason. I hope this helped. My mom might sould answer any other questions. I have a metal rod, I hear today they use a flexable rod. That should be better because I can’t bend my back. But I have had 3 children and a great life. But the back pain will always be their. Hot bsths are really the only thing that relieves my back pain. I also have a shoulder blade that sticks out, and when I was your daughters age I was very skinny. After her surgery you will probably see a big change in her personality. I grew 2 1/2″ on the operating table. It will be harder for you than her. Thats what my mom say’s any way, I disagree. It is not pleasant and it does hurt, but she can do it and she’ll be fine. Good Luck and God Bless Cindy

However the rod was poking me up under my skin and had to be removed the november so it was to stay at least 2 yrs but i didn’t get much help from it.A few yrs ago a friend was saying that my back appeared to be getting worse i did revisit my Dr with new xrays that did show a worsening curve .They say I’m too old for a repeat surgery so I have taken up swimming as advised. As for having kids my Dr said in most cases it will cause more problems .I have a more than 45 degree curve but no pains and no children

I was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 12. Had surgery at age 28 with Harrington Rod. My curve by age 28 was over 80%. They were not able to much straigthening because I waited too long. But at least it stopped it and I am alive versus what might have been. So if you have child that has it keep very close tabs on the curve. They told me it would stop when I was around 15. But it did not. There is still pain and as I get older arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, etc. but we have to deal with it. If you have it exercise as much as you can to keep the muscles strong and joints moving.

I have had scoliosis since I was 12. I am not almost 59. Had surgery with Harrington Rod at Johns Hopkins at age 28. I waited too long and did not get the straigthening I might have had. My curve was over 80% when the surgery took place and got about 20 degree improvement. If you have it and wonder if surgery is right, please have periodic check ups to make sure it does not continue to curve. I have after affects at this age, but I still stay active. Keep moving and stretching, and using your joints and muscles.

I was born with scoliosis, injured my neck falling straight onto my head off of the six ft monkey bars in 4th grd, and in 2002 after a car accident, I was declared disabled & underwent extensive physical therapy until released. I suffer from excrutiating pain in my neck and hips, waking with numbness in my hands & wrist and often burning in my hips. I’m trying to find a good place to go hear in Iowa that won’t cost an arm and a leg, cause I do not have ins. My spine is shaped in an “S” and curved while the arch in my neck curves the opposite way. I am almost thirty-one and if I had it corrected at an earlier age, I know I wouldn’t have as much pain. This is my first time researching the topic, so if u have any thoughts for me u can email me @ im2nice2c@msn.com
