The Automated External Defibrillator

Every now and then throughout history, a medical machine or device evolves to a point where it can greatly impact the health and well-being of mankind. The automated external defibrillator is one such device. In the last few years, due to advancements in design and technology, the popularity of these devices has grown exponentially.

Not long ago these devices were only used by trained professionals such as doctors and ambulance crews. Back then the smallest defibrillator was large, heavy and technically hard to use – and it was potentially very dangerous to the .

The main function of the defibrillator is to restart the heart of someone suffering cardiac arrest. But given that victims usually die within five minutes of the attack, and given that the average time it takes an ambulance to reach the site of an situation is at least nine minutes, most victims used to die before help reached them.

Enter a new breed of defibrillator.

Thanks to electronics miniaturization plus major advances in cardiac research, external defibrillators have become smaller (about the size of a baseball mitt), relatively inexpensive (you can pick one up for well under $1500), much safer, and far easier to use. Not to mention the fact that they now even more effective.

In fact, many AED’s on the market today can be used by someone with no previous medical training. This is because the defibrillator can assess whether or not the victim is in need of defibrillation, and if so, will audibly and visually guide the operator through the entire process of defibrillation.

The way they work are: the defibrillator will first test and determine if defibrillation is even necessary. Two paddles (electrodes) are then placed on the victim’s torso after a gel is applied to reduce impedance. An electrical is then administered through the body to the heart. This is repeated if necessary until the heart begins beating again naturally and synchronously.

How well do they work? Your chances of surviving sudden cardiac arrest are less than 5% if a defibrillator is not used within a few minutes of the event. Conversely, if a defibrillator is on hand you will have an over 90% chance of survival.

Automated external defibrillators are showing up in public and private places at an ever-increasing rate. This can only be a good thing since only a small percentage of people suffer cardiac arrest in a fully equipped medical facility.

Currently the only defibrillator you can buy without a prescription is the Heart Start. With a prescription there are more choices available. So whether you’re in the home or , an RV or boat, I say, let’s get one and live a safer life.

by: Joe Barton

Did you know that if you are over the age of 20, you could be part of the 65 million Americans who suffer from [tag]high blood pressure[/tag]? That is about one in three adults in the United States. Why should we be concerned? Each year, high blood pressure, also called hypertension, takes the lives of almost 60,000 Americans. Sadly, the rate of death from high blood pressure increased nearly 30 percent in the last decade alone. This ’silent killer’ has become an epidemic among nearly all ethnicities, genders and age groups. If you or a loved one suffers this devastating disease please continue to educate yourself and take action TODAY!

High Blood Pressure… What is it?

What is blood pressure? Blood pressure is basically the force pushing on the arteries by your blood as it passes through them. Someone with high blood pressure has blood that is putting higher than normal pressure on the arteries. This puts more stress on the body. Hence, the heart has to work so hard to get the blood pumped through those arteries that it can actually enlarge and damage the heart, eventually causing a [tag]heart attack[/tag], stroke, aneurysm and other heart problems if left untreated. High blood pressure can be deadly if left untreated.

How is Blood Pressure Scored?

Testing your blood pressure is extremely quick and simple. The actual measuring of blood pressure is done with the help of a blood pressure cuff, which most people are familiar with. It is highly recommended that you get your blood pressure checked immediately if you think you suffer from high blood pressure. Unfortunately, there are no symptoms for [tag]high blood pressure[/tag], hence the name ’silent killer’. Once tested you will receive two numbers.

Simply put, your blood pressure is measured as one number “over” another number, such as 120/80. The top number is your systolic pressure or the measure of the blood pressure while the heart is beating. The bottom number is your diastolic pressure or the pressure when the heart is at rest.

What is considered High Blood Pressure?

Here are the numbers for what is usually considered “normal,” as well as prehypertension and hypertension.

Systolic Pressure over Diastolic Pressure

Normal (less than 120 over less than 80)

Prehypertension (120-139 over 80-89)

Stage One (140-159 over 90-99)

Stage Two (160 or higher over 100 or higher)

If your blood pressure does not clearly fall into one of these categories, the higher number is the decisive number to look at. For example, Bill’s systolic blood pressure is 125 but his diastolic is 75. Bill would still be considered prehypertension. And Bill should continue reading!

Is there a cure for high blood pressure?

Fortunately, there is a ‘natural way’ to lower your high blood pressure. It is also highly recommended to seek medical advice if you suffer from hypertension. Naturally curing hypertension with doctors’ advice will always provide the best results. Unfortunately, many high blood pressure medications (Diuretics, Beta Blockers, ACE Inhibitors, Alpha Blockers and Vasodilators) have very unpleasant side effects. For information on this please check out our link below.

Start naturally treating your High Blood Pressure Today with these twelve tips!

1. Exercise for 30 minutes at least 4 times a week! Exercise equals a strong, efficient heart.

2. Loss that extra 15! This appears impossible… however, you would be surprised what will happen if you eat smaller portions and keep exercising!

3. Pass on the salt! Sodium reduction is a key to your high blood pressure treatment!

4. Grains are great, fruits are fabulous, and vegetables are vivacious!

5. Reduce your intake of alcohol.

6. Pack the potassium. Potassium is essential for lowering your blood pressure. Eat bananas, citrus fruits, low-fat milk and some vegetables.

7. More Magnesium! Potassium and magnesium usually go hand-in-hand for lowering blood pressure. Eat whole grains, dark green leafy vegetables and most nuts.

8. Calcium is King! This mineral will be a god-send to hypertension sufferers. Consider low-fat dairy products and calcium supplements.

9. Garlic has become a popular supplement! It is no wonder; it has great benefits to help your high blood pressure.

10. How about Hawthorn? No, not the writer… the herb! Sprinkle this herb on any dish and watch those blood pressure numbers plummet.

11. Multi-vitamins are loaded with vitamins that benefit your health and lower your blood pressure.

12. Relax! I know it sounds simple, but you would be surprised how many people forget about this.

Finally, don’t stop here! This is just the tip of the iceberg for getting your life back to normal and lowering your blood pressure. You are dealing with a deadly disease if left untreated. Please take a few more minutes and check out our high blood pressure/hypertension website which is 100% satisfaction guarenteed. You would be amazed what others are saying about it!
The excess accumulation of cholesterol can lead to a stroke or heart attack. This happens because the build-up of excess cholesterol begins to clog the blood vessels leading to arteriosclerosis. It is believed that the overall incidence of strokes and [tag]heart attacks[/tag] could be reduced by as much as 50% if Americans could reduce their cholesterol level by 25%. In fact, for every 1% of lowered blood cholesterol, the chances of having a [tag]heart attack[/tag] are reduced by 2%.

However, all cholesterol is not bad, as most know by now. There are two types of cholesterol: high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). HDL helps to remove excess fats from your blood while high LDL is known to lead to a higher incidence of strokes and heart attacks.

So the question is how can we follow a diet that helps us reduce LDL while still gaining the benefits of HDL? Below you will find a list of foods to avoid and foods you should eat in order to reduce overall cholesterol levels.

Food To Avoid

Eggs – Eggs have very high levels of LDL. (Note that the white of an egg is not bad for you.)

Fats and Oils – Fried foods, hydrogenated oils and excess amount of other oils are all considered to be very high in LDL.

Sugar Products – Most sugar products will increase LDL almost exclusively. Avoid them.

Meat Products – All meat products have very high levels of HDL and should be avoided.

Shell Fish – Though overall fish are healthy and help to reduce cholesterol this is not the case with shellfish. Crabs, shrimp (prawns), lobster and other such foods are very high in LDL.

Dairy Products – All dairy products have high levels of LDL. It is recommended that you use non-fat dairy products instead.

Fast Foods – Most, if not all fast foods are very high in fat content and increase LDL.

FOODS TO EAT

Low-Fat / Non-Fat Dairy Products – Low fat or no-fat dairy products are much better options than their normal counterparts but make sure you know the actual fat content of the item.

Non-Shell Fish – All fish are high in Omega-3 and as a result they actually help lower cholesterol.

Soy Products – Soy products high in protein are good for reducing cholesterol.

Nuts – Nuts such as walnut, almond, pecan and peanut all help to reduce cholesterol if they are eaten in their natural form.

By Atul Bahl

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) encompasses a variety of procedures used to treat patients with diseased arteries of the heart, for example, chest pain caused by a build-up of fats, cholesterol, and other substances from the blood (referred to as plaque) that can reduce blood flow to a near trickle, or a heart attack caused by a large blood clot that completely blocks the artery.

Coronary angioplasty is a medical procedure used to restore blood flow through a narrowed or blocked artery in the heart. The arteries of the heart (the coronary arteries) can become narrowed and blocked due to buildup of a material called plaque on their inner walls. This narrowing reduces the flow of blood through the artery and can lead, over time, to coronary artery disease and heart attack. In angioplasty, a thin tube with a balloon or other device on the end is first threaded through a blood vessel in the arm or groin (upper thigh) up to the site of a narrowing or blockage in a coronary artery. Once in place, the balloon is then inflated to push the plaque outward against the wall of the artery, widening the artery and restoring the flow of blood through it.

Angioplasty is used to:

•Relieve chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart.

•Minimize damage to the heart muscle during a heart attack. This damage occurs when blood flow is totally cut off to an area of the heart.

Angioplasty was first used in 1977. A tiny balloon was used to open or widen narrowed arteries. Since then, new devices and medicines have improved the procedure and made it appropriate for more people. The improvements include:

•Stents. A stent is a tiny mesh tube that looks like a small spring. The stent is inserted in the area where the artery is narrowed to keep it open. Some stents are “coated” with medication to help prevent the artery from closing again. Stents are used in most angioplasties except when an artery is too small for a stent to fit.

•When a stent is used, in 2 out of 10 people the artery will close again within the first 6 months.

•When a stent is not used, in 4 out of 10 people the artery will close again within the first 6 months.

•Plaque removers. Many kinds of plaque removers exist. They are used to cut away plaque that narrows the inside of the arteries.

•Laser. A laser is used to dissolve or vaporize plaque. First approved in 1992, laser devices are used in many major U.S. medical centers.

Research on angioplasty continues to:

•Increase its safety

•Prevent the artery from closing again

•Make it an option for more people
