Peeling Your Way To A Younger You

 By louise forrest

Years of sun damage, elemental damage, and simple aging can wreck havoc on your skin. You look in the mirror and you can see it all in your face. The fine lines, forming wrinkles, discolored areas, skin that just looks a little less healthy than it should.

But after so long, what can you do but continue taking care of your face? You have top of the line moisturizers, gentle exfoliators, firming creams, and other products that do what they can for the beauty of your skin.

What you may have neglected are the professional options out there. Anybody who is anybody gets botox these days, but you are not exactly fond of freezing your face into one expression. You could get microdermabrasion, though that is a very good option, it will take several visits to gets really fabulous results. Another option, if you feel like going all out on your facial, is to try a chemical peel.

A chemical peel uses specific chemical solutions and applies them to your skin. These chemical solutions can vary, the main types being peels that contain alpha hydroxy acid (or AHA), beta hydroxy acid (BHA), tricholoracetic acid (TCA), or phenol. Alpha hydroxy acid is also known as glycolic acid and beta hydroxy acid as salicylic acid.

These chemicals each have their own specific strength and can result in different types of peels. You can get a superficial peel, which is a light or micro peel, or medium to deep peels. Usually the use of AHA and BHA will apply with the superficial peels while TCA and phenol will be used for deeper peels.

The solutions placed on your skin, depending upon the type and how deep you want the peel to be, will actually dissolve the top layers of your skin. Superficial peels are usually the best, as you can do several with a measured amount of time to get good results. There are few risks and you may only experience redness, swelling, and skin sensitivity.

However, as you get deeper peels, the complications can be a little more severe. Medium and deep peels can possibly leave you with scarring, infection, and skin color changes. These color changes can be temporary, but they may also become permanent.

A chemical peel is meant to help restore your beauty by giving your face major exfoliation, removing skin surface cells that have been damaged by the sun, reducing wrinkles, skin discolorations, and helping your overall skin texture, and aiding in the rebuilding of collagen, which helps to prevent future wrinkles. A chemical peel can also remove blackheads and give you a temporary reprieve if you have oily skin by reducing the amount of oil your skin is producing.

If you are looking for an improvement for beauty, a chemical peel may sound pretty good, but you need to know all the facts before getting one. As chemical peels to have helpful benefits, there are a few things that even a chemical peel cannot change. You need to be aware of these things before you think a chemical peel will solve all your beauty problems.

If you have the appearance of blood vessels beneath your skin, a chemical peel is definitely not going to erase them or reduce their appearance. Likewise, if you have large pores, a chemical peel is not going to make them smaller or make them look smaller. When trying to rid yourself of skin discoloration, those with darker skin will have fewer results. If you have certain types of scarring, a chemical peel may not be able to fully remove them.

A chemical peel is not a facelift. It is simply a way of removing skin layers to help promote healthy skin growth underneath. This healthy skin then takes the place of your old skin layers, leaving you with fewer problems and healthier looking skin.

You will have to be the one to decide whether or not you want to do a chemical peel to help capture some of your past beauty, as a chemical peel can cost you anywhere from $500 to over $2,000.

Choose wisely in your options. True beauty should not have to come at the expense of potentially harming your skin or your wallet.

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted and unsightly veins (usually on the legs) that look lumpy and bluish through the skin. Blood is collected in the superficial veins of the leg, just below the skin surface, and delivered to deeper veins that run within the calf muscles. There are several different ways to remove varicose veins. Surgery is usually the best option for varicose veins visible beneath the skin. It is usually most effective in the largest varicose veins which will be completely removed. It is also effective for smaller varicose veins. Treatment can be undergone for therapeutic or cosmetic reasons. surgery can get rid of your varicose veins. Surgery is likely to improve the way your legs look. Surgery is likely to help any symptoms you have, such as aching, heavy and tired legs.

Surgery will not help thread or spider veins which are found within the layers of the skin itself and cannot be physically removed. The surgeon makes a cut at the bottom (ankle end) and the top (groin end) of the varicose vein. A thin, plastic, tube-like instrument is placed into the vein and tied around it. When the tube is pulled out, it pulls the vein from out under the skin. Small surgical cuts can also be made over individual veins to remove them. The operation is usually performed under a general anaesthetic and you are asleep and unaware throughout the procedure. The commonest operation (high tie or saphenofemoral ligation) is where a cut is made in the groin over the top of the main varicose vein. The risks for any surgery include Bleeding ,infection and bruising.

The commonest operation (high tie or saphenofemoral ligation) is where a cut is made in the groin over the top of the main varicose vein. Surgeons can remove varicose veins in several different ways. You can talk to your surgeon about how he or she plans to do your operation. The surgeon will usually remove only the section of vein between your groin and knee. Less often, the whole vein is taken out from groin to ankle. Surgeon makes two cuts: a five-centimetre (two-inch) cut along the crease in your groin, and a one-centimetre (half-inch) cut lower down your leg, usually on the inside of your knee. The surgeon then looks inside your groin and finds the top of the main surface vein in your leg. This vein is tied off at the top (and sometimes the lower end) to stop blood flowing through it.

This is called ligation. A thin, bendy wire is then passed down through the vein to the lower cut. There’s a stripping tool at the upper end of the wire. Surgeons can use an electric device that sucks small bits of vein out of your leg. The surgeon uses a light, which goes under your skin to see the veins that need to be removed. This operation is called transilluminated powered phlebectomy. Surgery seems to work for longer than injections do. Anaesthetics can have side effects. These are more likely with a general anaesthetic. Some of the common side effects of varicose vein surgery include swelling, scaring although scars tend to be less noticeable than varicose veins and fade with time and skin and calf muscle may be painful, swollen and bruised.

Breast Reconstruction Decision

by: Annabel Cruz

With today’s advanced surgical procedures, most women who undergo surgery for breast cancer are candidates for breast reconstruction. There are various types of reconstruction, and they are available to women who have had a mastectomy, partial mastectomy, or lumpectomy.

The decision of whether to have breast reconstruction arises at a very emotional time usually at the same time a woman learns she has breast cancer and needs surgery. It is a time when many questions come up about reconstruction, the most common of which are answered here briefly:

Is age a factor?

As long as a woman is in good general health and chooses a procedure that is compatible with her physical condition, age is usually not a factor. Breast reconstruction is frequently done for women in their 70s.

Who should not have breast reconstruction?

Women who are in poor general health, who have psychological problems that would be exacerbated by the surgery, or who have severe diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, a recent stroke nine-art attack, or severe lung disease usually should not have breast reconstruction.

Do I have to make a decision about having reconstruction before I have the mastectomy?

No, but the best time to think about breast reconstruction and to consult with a reconstruction surgeon is before you have your mastectomy. Depending on the type of mastectomy you have, you may be able to undergo immediate reconstruction while you’re still on the operating table. There are advantages and disadvantages to having immediate reconstruction (see below). Not all mastectomies lend themselves to this approach, however, which means it is important for you to understand all your options prior to mastectomy. Then if you choose to delay reconstruction, you at least were given the opportunity to make an informed decision.

Are there any health conditions that could have a negative effect on reconstruction?

Women who smoke are more susceptible to postoperative infections and slow healing, so if you smoke it is best to quit before surgery. Obesity is associated with an increased risk of pneumonia, blood clots in the legs, and complications related to anesthesia. The results of both types of reconstruction (implant and flap, both described below) are frequently unsatisfactory in obese women.

How many operations are involved in breast reconstruction?

Most breast reconstructions can be completed in two operations. The majority of the work is done during the first procedure, and the second usually involves reconstructing the nipple and areola, improving symmetry of the breasts, and making any minor adjustments.

Does breast reconstruction cause cancer?

There is no evidence that breast reconstruction causes or contributes to the development of cancer.

How will my breast reconstruction look in 5 to 10 years? The long-term results of breast reconstruction are different for each woman and depend on the type of procedure you have, your weight, and whether you experience intervening infections or other breast problems.

Immediate Reconstruction: Yes or No?

Once you know you must undergo mastectomy, it is usually difficult to also have to think about reconstruction. This is the time to surround yourself with supportive individuals, be they family, friends, health care providers, or breast cancer support group members. It is also the time to educate yourself about reconstruction. This is a way to take charge of your health, to have some control over the direction your life is taking.

When it comes to the question of whether you are a candidate for immediate or delayed reconstruction, ask your breast and reconstruction surgeons to explain why they are recommending one or the other.

The primary factor that determines the best approach is whether the cancer has affected the lymph nodes and to what extent. Chemotherapy usually is not started until 2 or 3 weeks after mastectomy to allow for healing. If your surgeons believe you must begin chemotherapy immediately to get the best possible outcome, they may recommend delaying reconstruction.

Combining mastectomy and reconstruction adds days and occasionally weeks to the healing period, which would significantly delay chemotherapy and possibly have a negative impact on your prognosis.

If your surgeons say immediate reconstruction is an option for you, you must decide if it’s best for you.

To help you make a decision, it may help to look at the pros and cons (outlined below) and to discuss your concerns with those close to you. The best candidates for immediate reconstruction are women with early breast cancer who are in good general health, women with small breasts, and those who need both breasts reconstructed. However, even if you are ready physically, you may not be mentally or emotionally prepared. In that case, it may be better to delay reconstruction.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Immediate Reconstruction

PROS

· Avoiding an additional surgical procedure.
· One less procedure means less chance of complications.
· Less recovery time needed.
· Costs less money
· Less time to dwell on the cancer.
· Less negative impact on body image.
· Faster opportunity to get on with your life.

CONS

· Less time to gather information to make an informed decision.
· Surgical procedure is longer, which increases the chances of complications.
· Possible dissatisfaction with the results
· May delay mourning period for the missing breast

Abdominoplasty is also known as a ‘tummy tuck’ procedure that is used to reshape and firm the abdomen. This procedure involves removing excess fat and skin from the center of the lower abdomen in order to tighten the muscles of the abdomen wall. Generally this procedure is performed on women and people who have abdominal fat deposits that won’t respond to diet and exercise.

A complete abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) procedure is performed by creating a small incision from one hip to the next (just above the pubic area). After this, another cut is made to free the surrounding skin away from the navel. The skin is detached from the abdomen wall which will reveal the muscles. The skin is then reattached and a new hole for the navel is created and stitched into place.

When preparing for your surgery it is best to listen to all of the instructions your surgeon gives you. This will most likely include guidelines on eating, drinking, smoking and what medications to take. Overexposure to the sun before surgery can slow down the time it takes to heal. Smoking is also not recommended for at least a week before your surgery.

After the surgery has been completed your abdomen will probably feel swollen and you will most likely undergo some pain and discomfort. Your doctor will provide you with medication to help you out during this time. Some people are able to return to work within two weeks of the procedure, while others take 3-4 weeks. Minor exercise will help you heal better, and it is recommended to start an exercise program to reduce swelling. Expect your scars to last for around 9-12 months after the procedure. While these scars will never disappear completely, most will not show under clothing and even bathing suits.

by: Alison Stevens

The purpose of this article is to provide some basic ideas regarding the cost of liposuction on various parts of the body. Liposuction costs will fluctuate widely depending on the type of liposuction procedure to be performed and the area of the body to be treated. Liposuction cost for a single procedure on one area can cost as little as $800, but this cost can reach many thousands of dollars where more extensive liposuction is required. Additionally, the liposuction cost will vary from one plastic surgeon to another and also depends on the geographic location of the plastic surgeon. However, in general terms, the liposuction cost is based on the area of the body where the fat is removed.

Liposuction Financing and Costs

There are many variables in attempting to estimate the cost of a liposuction procedure. Whilst liposuction is routine cosmetic surgery performed by many plastic or cosmetic surgeons the variables can include the difference in cost between performing a procedure on a man or a woman. Liposuction for men is generally a more extensive – and therefore more expensive – procedure than for women, due in part to the differences in fat texture. A person’s general health and age can also affect the cost of the procedure. It should be noted that liposuction is not appropriate for those suffering from diabetes or other auto-immune diseases, heart or artery problems, or with a history of blood clotting or restricted blood flow. Liposuction financing and cosmetic surgery financing generally is not widely recommended because it makes the procedure so much more expensive in the long run. If you do need to make financing arrangements for your surgery you should be able to make an application through your doctor’s office.

Liposuction is routinely performed by many cosmetic surgeons. When you begin your search for a plastic surgeon, look for one who specializes in liposuction. Assess the difference in liposuction costs within your local area plus nearby regions. You may find cost differences between cosmetic surgeons practicing in urban, suburban or rural areas. You should get a more meaningful liposuction cost estimate after your initial examination by your surgeon and when you and your surgeon have developed a surgical plan for your procedure. Check that your surgeon has the appropriate training and board certification when you are investigating the cost for liposuction. A highly qualified, board-certified surgeon will command a higher fee, however that should help to ensure a successful outcome with fewer risks of complications. Remember that liposuction cost will vary between surgeons and also between geographic locations.

Ultrasonic

The introduction of ultrasonic liposuction increased the number of patients suitable for body sculpting. Ultrasonic liposuction allows fat to be removed from areas that were previously unsuitable for liposuction and can allow for more complete fat removal from various body areas. Of course, this advanced liposuction technique comes at a price and ultrasonic liposuction costs can be significantly higher than traditional tumescent liposuction.

Other Cost Factors

Other factors can affect liposuction cost in certain cases: If you need to travel to have your liposuction procedure performed in a different geographic region, you will need to allow for your travel and additional accommodation expenses. However, these travel costs need not make a major impact on the total cost of your liposuction.

Fees

Liposuction can be performed on many different areas of the body by cosmetic surgeons of varying qualifications and skills. The surgeon may employ different types of machines, and use different types of anesthesia; all these differences will affect cost.

As with most plastic surgery, liposuction cost is comprised of three main fees: surgeon’s fees, anesthesia fees, and operating facility fees. Additional costs for liposuction techniques can include compression garments and bandages worn after surgery, fees for laboratory tests, or other post-operative care fees. Some surgeons will prescribe treatments such as ultrasound, massage, or Endermologie after liposuction, and there will be fees associated with these additional treatments. Ask your surgeon to advise you in advance about other costs, charges, or fees.

Liposuction costs can vary greatly between different city, state and rural areas and also between surgeons of varying experience and qualifications. While consulting with a variety of plastic surgeons regarding liposuction procedures people will find major differences in liposuction cost. Ensure you engage a reputable and highly qualified surgeon to perform your procedure.

Cosmetic surgery has taken a new perspective and has a whole new meaning with our celebrities (Hollywood and Bollywood) today opting for it like a necessity. Sometimes they are not even done for correction. These surgeries, no doubt, change the look. The minor change which makes a major difference.

Rhinoplasty or nose surgery, breast lifts, breast reduction, breast implants and liposuction are the most commonly opted for cosmetic surgeries. One does not necessarily have to be fat for a liposuction; cellulite could also be due to fatty deposits. Sometimes on losing too much of weight the skin starts sagging and falling loose. No amount of exercise or gyming (does not exist in the dictionary but seems apt) can help sagging or loose skin. Only the removal of fat like a tummy tuck or a thigh lift can alter the situation and can reduce the appearance of cellulite to an extent.

If one can one should avoid weight gain in the first place, though ofcourse it is sometimes genetic and sometimes there are reasons like hyperthyroidism that can’t be prevented. In a study reported in the journal Clinical Endocrinology, the researchers studied 162 people with hyperthyroidism for six months. Those who already were overweight, whose hyperthyroidism was caused by Graves Disease, or who had lost weight prior to diagnosis all had similar amounts of weight gain, which was approximately 5 to 5.5 kg (11 to 12 pounds) over the six months during which they were treated with antithyroid drugs for radioactive iodine. There are some unavoidable reasons.

Liposuction is kind of a cosmetic surgery performed to remove localized fat deposits from different parts of the body. You can aim at a specific area and have fat removed. This kind of fat is difficult to lose with dieting or exercise. Though there is a false notion that liposuction is a treatment for obesity. This surgery is primarily performed to remove fatty deposits or loose sagging skin from a particular area. There is enough skin left back which does not disrupt the body configuration and adds value to the body silhouette.

Lip augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures. Last year, approximately 264,000 people underwent lip-plumping surgery. With fuller lips one can create a more youthful, vibrant look. This is primarily achieved through injections and grafting.

Injections: using small needles, the lip is filled with a soft substance to create a fuller appearance. The most widely used substance is collagen, which is found in cow skin. Although purified, collagen can cause allergic reactions in some patients.

A sensitivity test should always be performed prior to the actual procedure. Because the body slowly absorbs the collagen, results usually only last one to three months although the procedure can be repeated as many times as desired.

Fat harvested from other areas of the body – usually the abdomen or thighs – can also be injected into the lips. One great advantage to this procedure is that there is no possibility of an allergic reaction, although as with collagen the results are temporary.

Other injectable lip plumpers include Artecoll, a synthetic material which augments the natural tissue to create long lasting results, Autologen (collagen from the patient’s own skin), which also has relative longevity and Dermalogen, which is extracted from the skin of a human donor then screened and processed to prevent the risk of disease.

The effects of the latter are relatively short term and similar to the effects of collagen.

Grafting: under local anaesthesia, material is inserted through incisions made in the inside corners of the mouth. The incisions are then closed with stitches.

Alloderm is a popular human donor material, which is strictly processed to prevent infection. The material is often absorbed, so results are temporary lasting between 6 and 12 months.

A more effective material is Softform, which does not shrink and is never absorbed into the body. Scar tissue forms at each end, keeping it in place. This also makes it easy to remove if it becomes infected.

Fat grafting produces lasting results in about 50% of those who try it. Though it can be reabsorbed by the body in time, this is popular as people are comfortable with the idea of using fat from their own bodies in order to enhance their own lips.

Most lip enhancements take between 30 minutes and two hours to perform. If the patient has no medical problems the procedure is usually on an outpatient basis, allowing them to return home a few hours after surgery.

Topical anaesthesia is generally used before injections so the procedure involves no discomfort. Most people are able to return to their normal routine within two days. Grafts usually involve more pain and a longer recovery period. Local anaesthesia is used in grafting.

Local anaesthesia makes the procedure painless but may lead to discomfort later. Recovery time may take one to two weeks and the patient may experience some problems with drooling. Grafting can also leave lips feeling unusually stiff for up to two to three months.

As with any surgical procedure, there is always a possibility of infection or reaction to anaesthesia.

There are non-surgical options for lip augmentation. One such method can be performed by your dentist. The premise is simple. The structure underneath is enlarged in order to change the appearance of the surface. Teeth support the lips so enlarging the teeth gives the lips a fuller appearance.

Dental lip enhancements are performed in one of two ways; either by changing the shape of one’s arch of teeth (or bite) through orthodontics or changing the shape of the front teeth through restorative treatments such as laminate veneers or porcelain crowns. The former treatment is nearly permanent; the latter can last between 5 and 12 years.

Now that you are armed with information relating to cosmetic lip plumping procedures why not learn about some more natural methods that can give you sexier, fuller lips without the potential risks.

Now that you have made the decision to undergo rhinoplasty and have prepared for your surgery, the next step is the rhinoplasty surgery itself and the after affects.

Rhinoplasty can be performed in the surgeon’s office-based facility, an outpatient surgery center, or a hospital. Usually the surgery is performed on an outpatient basis but if it is a complicated rhinoplasty then you may be required to stay in the hospital.

You will either be under local or general anesthesia. Local anesthesia is when you are lightly sedated and your nose and the surrounding area is numb. You know what is going on but cannot feel what is happening to your nose. General anesthesia is when you sleep through the surgery and do not know what is happening.

Rhinoplasty surgery normally takes one to two hours unless it is a complex rhinoplasty. The rhinoplasty itself consists of the skin being separated from the bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage are sculpted into the desired shape and the skin is then draped over the new nose framework. Most surgeons make the rhinoplasty incision inside the nose in the nostrils, but some surgeons prefer the “open” procedure where the incision is made in the middle part of the nose nearest the upper lip. There is a scar left but the scar is hardly noticeable in that area of your nose.

When your rhinoplasty is complete, the surgeon will place a splint on your nose to help it maintain its shape. Sometimes nasal packs or splint may be place in the nostrils as well.

After the rhinoplasty your face may be puffy, you may be experiencing pain, or you may have a dull headache. Take the medication prescribed by your Doctor as needed. Stay in bed with your head elevated for the first day after your rhinoplasty. There will be some swelling and bruising around your eyes and this swelling will reach its highest peak at 2-3 days after surgery. Cold compresses will reduce the swelling and make your eyes and face feel better. In a few days you will feel much better than you look as most swelling and bruising takes at least two weeks to disappear. A little bleeding is common after a rhinoplasty and you may have a “stuffy” feeling nose for a few weeks. Any nasal packing or stitches will be removed after a few days.

You will be up and feeling somewhat better within two days after your rhinoplasty. You should be able to return to school or sedentary work after a week or so. The Doctor will give you specific guidelines as to what you can return to and when during your follow-up visits. Follow the Doctor’s instructions and keep your follow-up visits to ensure that your surgery is successful!

The Facts About Rhinoplasty Nasal Surgery – Part I

by: Wendy Butler

Rhinoplasty is a surgery to reshape the nose. This is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the United States. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of the nose, change the shape of the tip or bridge of the nose, narrow the span of the nostrils, change the angle between the nose and upper lip, or correct a birth defect or injury as well as relieve breathing problems. Rhinoplasty can change appearance and increase self-confidence but you will not necessarily end up with a “perfect” nose.

The best candidates for rhinoplasty are people looking for an improvement in their nose and not perfection. You also must be physically healthy, psychologically stable, and have realistic expectations of the future results of the surgery.

Are there any risks to rhinoplasty?

Any surgery creates a possibility of complications, including infections, nosebleed, or reactions to anesthesia. Reduce your risks by carefully following your surgeon’s instructions before and after surgery. After the surgery, small burst blood vessels may appear on your nose as small red spots that are minor but may be permanent. There is not usually any scarring if the rhinoplasty incision is inside the nose. When an “open” technique is used there is a small scar on base of nose but it is usually invisible.

Some tricks for planning your rhinoplasty are having a high level of communication with your surgeon and his office. Discuss the rhinoplasty techniques that are to be performed, what kind of anesthesia will be used, and the risks associated with the surgery. You need to communicate to your Doctor about any previous surgery’s you might have had, especially nose surgeries. You also need to tell your Doctor about any allergies you have or breathing difficulties as well as any medications, vitamins, or recreational drugs you have taken. If you smoke, you need to tell your Doctor as he/she might have some advice for you concerning smoking. If you have any questions, let your Doctor know so that your nerves will not get irritated.

To prepare for your surgery your Doctor will give you guidelines on eating and drinking the day before, smoking, what medications you can and cannot take, and washing your face. Carefully follow the Doctor’s instructions to ensure your rhinoplasty goes smoothly and you heal quickly. Be sure you arrange for someone to drive you home after your rhinoplasty and help you out for a couple of days afterwards at home.

In part two of this article you will learn what to expect during your rhinoplasty and afterwards.

Face lifts are one of the most serious surgeries you can have when it comes to cosmetic surgery. Not only are they costly, but they involve a long healing process, and the results can be very unnatural looking and “plastic”.

It is certainly not anyone’s wish to come out looking like they’ve had their face pulled back, but rather that they have turned the clock back ten years, gracefully. Unfortunately, the “good” facelifts are few and far between. Are there really any effective alernatives, a “non surgical facelift”, if you will?

Well, thanks to the ever-growing market for this type of beauty and youth restoration, there are actually some less drastic measures you can take that will literally take years off you face, without surgery, or with minimally invasive surgery performed by a professional. Let’s take a look at the non surgical alternatives to facelifts. The first, and increasingly popular and less invasive option is what you call a “mini facelift”.

The mini facelift involves small incisions made in key areas around the lower part of the jawline, rather than a complete sweep of the skin surrounding the face, and pinpointed areas where the face can be gently pulled to look more taught and erase wrinkles.

The mini facelift gives you a younger looking face and neck, with less cost, less recovery time, and a more natural outcome that leaves the lower part of your face refreshed and rejuvenated looking. It also pulls any jowl-like appearance and loose skin around the neck back up to where it should be.

Another non surgical alternative to a full-on facelift is a subdermally injected filling of the problem areas which usually goes away after a few months, and needs to be re-done after it is absorbed into the body. This method of facial rejuvenation can actually tighten the skin, pull it back up, and make it looked toned and youthful again, while erasing fine lines and wrinkles by physically filling them in.

Facial rejuvenation can be a combination of fillers used to fill in wrinkles and lines. The different fillers that may be used are injected locally to the areas that need it, and include colllagen, restylane, hyaluronic acid and even fat injections that are either human derived or come right from you.

There are also 100% non invasive options that can be used by a professional to help smooth away the lines that have come with age. One of those, which requires quite a bit of healing time and also some pain is laser resurfacing.

A laser is used over the surface area of the facial skin, and it actually helps to take away layers of skin as well as to help rejuvenate collagen production. It is pretty expensive and your skin will be extremely red and raw for weeks if not months after this is performed. The results, however are fairly extraordinary.

A less painful alternative to full-on laser resurfacing is the Fraxel Laser, which actually does the same thing as a normal laser does, but it doesn’t penetrate all of the skin’s layers, rather it allows the user to penetrate and treat only the specific areas that need it.

This makes for less raw skin and quicker recovery. This is not cheap either though, it will run you anywhere from $1,000.00 to $1,500.00 per treatment, and at least five treatments are needed to see a dramatic improvement. I’ve seen the before and afters though, and they are nothing short of impressive.

Chemical peels are another option for facial rejuvenation, and they can vary in strength and severity as well. A chemical peel is performed by a professional, and they can make the chemicals either strong or weak, depending on the depth of skin damage they would like to remove.

This is primarily used for clients with a lot of photodamage, or discoloration, and it is especially known for restoring a healthful glow to the skin as well as an even color and texture, which often comes with youthful skin. The recovery time depends on how deep the peel goes.

Of course another non surgical alternative to a face lift is Botox, but I look at Botox as more of a local and preventive measure against further wrinkles, not really a “lift” since what it does is freeze the area it’s injected to, it doesn’t actually lift or pull the skin back to its rightful place.

Botox is probably a good option for some, but I tend to dislike the appearance it gives to some people, as it doesn’t allow them to fully express themselves, and that is what makes our faces beautiful, the fact that we can use expressions to show our emotions.

As far as “do it yourself” alternatives to facelifts, there are some pretty decent products out there on the market that you can use on a daily basis to help keep the skin fresh and also to help keep it lifted, toned and youthful looking. There are now hand held soft light lasers available for purchase online.

They emulate the soft light lasers that are often used in dermatologists offices to help stimulate collagen and rejuvenate the skin, helping to soften wrinkles and even acne scarring. I bought one of these myself and had some very good results, but I just couldn’t keep up with the nightly use, and so I must admit I let the results go away.

There are also some excellent home microdermabrasion kits that can be purchased for home use. They allow you to gently take dead skin cells and damaged layers of skin off, and often leave you with a glow and a softer, more youthful look. Another home kit that can be purchased are light acid peels for the face.

These are probably not nearly the strength of a chemical peel you would receive under professional care, but they can certainly offer a benefit that you can use any time you feel your face needs a nice little extra “lift”.

And there you have it, what I think are the most effective alternatives to the drastic face lift. They range in cost considerably, as well as the recovery time and healing process, but they all can have some astounding results in your campaign against aging skin.
