Constipation is not the only symptom that indicates you might benefit from a natural colon cleanse. It is not uncommon for hard material made of a mixture of mucous and fecal matter to become impacted on the inside walls of the colon and intestines. This causes a variety of health problems. For one thing, nutrients have a harder time absorbing into the bloodstream from the intestines. This situation, in turn, can cause a person to feel tired, depressed, and bloated.

A colon cleanse works to soften and remove this material. A herbal colon cleanse is a natural version of a laxative basically. Herbs that help you move wastes through your system include cascara sagrada bark, aloe vera leaf, and fenugreek seed. These are often found in herbal formulas for constipation.

Other herbs that support the laxative effect of the above botanicals are fennel seed, which helps with gas and cramps, and peppermint, which aids the digestion. Along with laxative herbs, a colon cleanse is likely to include herbs like dandelion root or red clover, which are cleansing to the blood and the urinary tract, so that the whole system gets cleansed of toxins.

Unfortunately, herbs can be as harsh to the system as conventional laxatives. There is another type of natural colon cleanse on the market. This is an oxygen based formula that reacts chemically with the hydrochloric acid in your stomach. This chemical reaction causes the fecal material, sometimes called plaque, to melt into liquid and gas so it can be expelled easily.

The herbal colon cleanse will cause you to pass rubbery dark material with the consistency of tire tread, while the oxygen based natural colon cleanse will give you liquid or soft stools.

Another aspect of natural colon cleansing is to add fiber to the diet. This can be in the form of bran, psyllium seed husks, prunes, and many other natural foods. It is sensible, if you have problems with constipation anyway, to eat a fiber rich diet. Fiber alone, however, will not give you a complete colon cleanse. Still, it makes sense to eat more fiber rich fresh fruit, vegetables, and whole grains, and less junk food.

Colon cleansing can also include enemas. In fact, during a colon cleanse, you might be advised to have an enema on any day that you do not have a bowel movement. The goal is to have three or four bowel movements on any given day, which are likely if you choose an oxygen based cleanse.

Removing the fecal matter from the digestive tract will eliminate many toxins from your system. This can result in clearer skin, more energy, fewer headaches, improved allergy symptoms, and many other benefits. Of course, results vary from individual to individual, but there are many reports of multiple benefits from doing a colon cleanse.

I’ve put together this list of 4 tips to help you with your first Colon Cleansing.

1) You want to research about colon cleansing online. Learn all you can about it, because although you may think it’s for you it just might not be. There are licensed facilities that will do the colon cleansing for you or you may opt to do it yourself with herbs. Either way you should be prepared by doing the proper research.

2) If doing a colon cleansing in a licensed facility please follow their rules. They will probably not have you eat for 12-24 hours before the procedure and will most likely ask you to drink lots of water instead. Water helps with the cleansing process and pure water will be used during the actual cleansing. Be prepared to immediately use the restroom when your cleansing is complete. It is just a part of the detoxification process. There is no need to feel embarassed as this is completely normal.

Visit The Colon Cleansing Store At Amazon.com

3) If doing a home colon cleansing follow the instructions carefully. Usually a home herbal cleanse takes place over 30 days by taking herbal pills. What will happen is the first few days will probably be pretty uncomfortable for you. You’ll be using the restroom up to 5 times per day. If this doesn’t slow down then you should take less of the herbal pills so as not to dehydrate your body. To help with hydration drink, at minimum, your body weight in ounces of water. So if you weigh 120 pounds, drink 120 ounces of water per day. That may be difficult, but water is healthy and it will help with the cleansing process.

4) While going through the discomfort just remember that you’re doing something great for your body and will feel much better once the process is complete. No pain no gain certainly holds true for colon cleansing. Althoug there should be no actual pain, just some discomfort.

If you follow these 4 tips your first colon cleansing experience should be a much easier undertaking. Please look out for my next article with even more colon cleansing tips.

By Sean Novak

Ah…the infamous colonoscopy. Something oh so familiar to most of us with IBD, but shrouded in mystery to others.

First off, what is a colonoscopy? According to Wikipidea, a “Colonoscopy is the minimally invasive endoscopic examination of the large colon and the distal part of the small bowel with a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube passed through the anus.” Um…camera up anus = “minimally invasive”…not sure who wrote that but I would assume they never had one. So basically, they stick a camera where the sun don’t shine so they can have a look at what is going on up there and what’s causing all your pain or bleeding, or whatever else caused them to stick that camera up there.

To most, this sounds a little uncomfortable and not something that you would want to do for fun. Well…in all honesty it’s not all that bad. For those who have been through this a few times we can tell you that the preparation for a colonoscopy is far worse than the colonoscopy itself. So, lets talk about the prep.

Since we are going to be having pictures of our colon taken it would make sense, and be rather beneficial, if there was no “crap” in your colon to get in the way of the tiny camera. So yes, we are going to have to clean it out, and clean it out good. Methods of doing this will vary based on your physician, but most entail drinking a really tasty cocktail, taking laxatives, and perhaps an enema. Oh yeah, no eating either…since we are trying to clean out the colon it doesn’t make any sense to put more stuff in it. The prep usually begins with a clear liquid diet approximately 24 hours before the colonoscopy and then the laxatives and yummy cocktail sometime later.

Time for a few tips: Make sure you have a stack of good magazines or a good book in the bathroom. Also, splurge for the expensive toilet paper. And finally…Don’t stray far from the bathroom cause once you take the laxative and drink your cocktail you and the Porcelain God are going to become close friends for the next few hours.

Having an appointment for the colonoscopy early in the morning is highly recommended by yours truly. The reason for this is you’ll get to eat again that much sooner. Once the preparation is over the rest is cake. To start, an IV will be started and you will be mildly sedated. You will lay on your left side and that will usually be the last thing you remember until you wake up. During the colonoscopy the Doctor will be able to do all kinds of great things with that scope of his. He will first of all get a great look at your colon. He or She will also be able to take biopsy’s as well as remove any polyps. Most importantly they will hopefully find the cause of your symptoms.

You will need someone to drive you home as you will be mildly “wasted” from the sedation following the colonoscopy, and won’t be able to drive or operate heavy machinery for the rest of the day. Your results of the colonoscopy are usually available right there and then except for biopsy results which usually take a few days.

And that’s it…That’s all there is to it. By far the worst part is the prep but once you make it through that the worst is then behind you. And make sure you go somewhere really good for lunch that day as a reward for making it! One more thing…Make sure you smile for those pictures ; )

Colon cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the United States, and the entire world. It is the second most fatal cancer in the United States, causing tens of thousands of deaths every year, with close to two hundred thousand new diagnoses. Colon cancer prevention is therefore a subject of interest to people everywhere.

<!--
google_ad_client = "pub-8096163373271288";

The good news about colon cancer is that it’s actually a very preventable disease. Colon cancer prevention has traditionally been focused on maintaining a healthy diet, and this is still recommended today. Diets high in fiber, and low in fatty foods and red meat are linked to a reduced risk of developing colon cancer. Fish and poultry are not linked to an increase risk, and some supplements such as calcium and selenium have been shown to lower your risk. There have also been some studies suggesting that aspirin may help lower your risk of colon cancer.

These are all colon cancer prevention tips that may be useful to some, but for others you are going to develop the disease no matter how hard you try to avoid it. Many cases of colon cancer are linked to an inherited condition that leads to the growth of hundreds of what are called ‘polyps’ along your colon and rectum. Polyps are normally benign, but if you are a polyp grower there is an extremely high likelihood that one or more will become cancerous in your lifetime. If you have had close relatives that have developed colon cancer, there is a good chance you may be a poly grower.

The best colon cancer prevention is therefore focused on catching it early. You can’t always prevent a polyp from becoming cancerous, but if you catch it early there is a very high survival rate (over 90%). Getting a regular colonoscopy exam is probably the best form of colon cancer prevention you could ever do for yourself. Even if you are not a ‘polyp’ grower, getting a colonoscopy once every five years vastly reduces your odds of dying from colon cancer. The exams are of course uncomfortable to say the least, but colon cancer is a lot more uncomfortable.

The biggest reason why colon cancer kills so many people every year isn’t because it is such a deadly form of cancer, but rather because people aren’t aware of colon cancer prevention measures like colonoscopys. Or they may be aware of preventative measures, but just don’t believe that they’ll ever get the disease themselves. Another good colon cancer prevention technique is therefore educating yourself and the people you know about it!
