Fusion will ruin you. Try to get an artificial pro disc l implanted. I have been fused and the results are a very stiff spine and the pain only goes away when I do nothing physical. So If you wish to sit in a rocking chair the rest of your life go for the fusion. There are only a few places in the usa that perform artificial disc and insurance is a big problem. Most will not pay for the procedure even though it is fda approved!! Good luck

I had back surgery a couple of years ago for 2 herniated discs, and to be honest, i didn't really need the meds after the surgery. they gave me oxycodone afterwards and really didn't need them. if you don't get surgery, i would suggest neuromuscular massage. the surgery never helped me, but the massages did. when i got off the massage table, it was the 1st time i didn't have pain in my back for 8 months.

Hi Mimi,

Sorry you and I and others are affected by such a painful disorder. I have had very similar surgery and now having L4-L5 disectomy and S1 stenosis of foreman opening completely compressing the nerve. On pain patch and oxy for for 2yrs, unable to work for one yr. Just telling you this to let you know yr not alone and I have sympathy for your pain. Not sure what state you live in I am in MN, I Have met with a Doctor with Abbott Hospital and having the surgery Sept.8th. I Sincerely pray that you will find the right Dr. or force to heal you so you will be pain free. I read your story and felt like I was reading my Back/pain Bio. Take Care and keep strong, I know it's very tough sometimes. I will pray for!!

I was reading a post from a few yrs back saying that u were going to have the hardware removed from ur back after fusion. I am curious if this helped. I have had several back surgeries with the last 2 being lumbar fusion (1st didn't work) and am in more pain than ever. I have asked my pain dr. about the possibility of removing the hardware helping with my pain and i can't seem to get a straight answer, hearing from someone who actually had it done is much better anyway. Hope to hear from u soon and hope u r doing much better.

I have had 2 surgeries on my back. I have had back pain since 1986, first operation was in 1999 lamenectomy, the dr said they had to scrape arthritis out of my spinal cord. went fairly well till 2004. Although I was still in pain, it was nothing as bad as before and at least I could walk and work. In 2004 I feel in a parking lot that was covered in ice. Have gone straight downhill since. I had 5 buldged disc. L-1 through L-5 In Jan of this year Drs did a fussion, although the pain was great hrs after I woke up, it was a different pain. Then I went to physical therapy, it was going well there till the 6th or 7th visit.(wrong thing to do)They had me doing an excercise there that twisted me at the hips. I told them how bad it hurt, therapist said (no pain-no gain)now I am in worse shape ever. Although I have been back to the surgeon and neurologist both they said it is scar tissue-that it will get better, getting worse every day. I go the gym and work out some, though the pain keeps me from doing a lot. I cannot hardly walk more than 100 feet, can't sleep more than 2 hrs at a time. I take 2 tylenol 3, 2 muscle relaxers, 2 doxepin(sleep aid) before going to bed, still up within 2 hrs. I am so tired! I want to rest-but most of all I just want to stop hurting. I am only 51 yrs old. Been putting up with back pain for 25 yrs now. Am thinking seriously about going to see a pain management. Although in my many years of back pain, pain medication never seems to help. I have taken Lortabs for most of them, one does nothing-2 just makes my head feel weird. I don't pain medication, but I also do not want the pain. Anyone with any ideas? email me-kellygraves@yahoo.com

I have a couple of collapsed discs and the other discs are not doing well either. Very painfull. I was taking lots of medication, using back patches, ointments etc... to control my pain. I'll have surgery as a last resort since it's not guaranteed to make you feel better. More often than not, I'm hearing that you're worse after surgery. I did not want to get addicted to drugs. I even went to therapy that helped but only for a short time. I heard about a little machine called the TENS Unit. I started using it and it has helped me alot in controlling my pain with minimal to no medications. Sometimes I could not even get out of bed in the mornings. Using the TENS unit and a Heating Pad helps me alot. TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. This little machine that's very affordable delivers electrical pulses through the skin to the surface and deep nerves to control pain. It does not have any systematic side effects. You can learn more about it by going to the website at www.empi.com. If you decide to use it, I hope it helps you as it's helping me. God Bless.

Hello to you that have gone through back surgeries,

I live near Atlanta and I understand so much what I have read about everyone ! At 14 I found out I had scoliosis and had to have a spinal fusion to try and straighten my lower lumber from a 45C curve as much as possible. After having a harrington rod connected it was straightened to a 31 degrees. At 15 the rod broke unfortunately and I had to have another fusion and repair work plus another body cast a long with a rod. At age 20 I was in college as my back pain got awful. I needed another fusion in order to give my back support once again. This one worked for 18 yrs. w/o any complications. During these yrs. my husband and I had our three son's. A few yrs.later my back got really awful once again but this time I ended up in chronic pain after this laminectomy/disectomy. This surgeon had used invasive screws and attachments that gave me lots of nerve damage plus burning pain 24/7. Even so I know things were not right enough for me to even live any kind of life so I went to Emory Spinal Clinic in Atlanta for surgery to give my spine support. The head surgeon came in after looking at my spine pics and told me that I had "NO FUSION" (from T10 and below to L2-3 to L5-S1) and a metal plate had come out from the front of my spine and was embedded into my abdominal aeorta. That was the next surgery to remove the metal plate w/o killing me ! God took care of me ! I was in body casts after these surgeries. YET I WAS ALIVE !

Anyway, a long story short I ended up with chronic pain getting adhesive arachnoiditis ( this is when scar tissue intertwines w nerves and causes compression on the spinal cord, fibromyalgia, and complex regional pain after getting a second pain pump that sent meds to my back for 8 yrs. The next two surgeries ( I will be 53 now ) that really messed me up cause my blood pressure to spike up after I have been asleep for an hour or so and then it produces the "fight or flight" response ,fear , pounding headaches, sweating, and stomach upset w trembling in the stomach. Has this happened to anyone else ? I have spinal cord compression plus many more problems w spinal cord damage. Have you ever read about autonomic hyperreflexia ? I wonder if this is what makes my blood pressure go up to an extreme amount off & on since 1995. I have read that it can cause a person to have a stroke ! I will be mentioning these symtoms to my neurologist& my pain physician. Please keep me in your thoughts. Does anyone know what this can be ?

May you all have a better day w your pain and do better all in all !
God Bless You,
Denee all

My daughter had scoliosis surgery when she was 16 years old. She is now 42. She recovered very well. She was in a body cast for a few weeks, then a brace for a few months. She was not in pain and the surgery corrected the curvature. I know it's difficult being 16 and having this surgery but after she healed, she was able to do everything. Good Luck
