Hello to you that have gone through back surgeries,

I live near Atlanta and I understand so much what I have read about everyone ! At 14 I found out I had scoliosis and had to have a spinal fusion to try and straighten my lower lumber from a 45C curve as much as possible. After having a harrington rod connected it was straightened to a 31 degrees. At 15 the rod broke unfortunately and I had to have another fusion and repair work plus another body cast a long with a rod. At age 20 I was in college as my back pain got awful. I needed another fusion in order to give my back support once again. This one worked for 18 yrs. w/o any complications. During these yrs. my husband and I had our three son's. A few yrs.later my back got really awful once again but this time I ended up in chronic pain after this laminectomy/disectomy. This surgeon had used invasive screws and attachments that gave me lots of nerve damage plus burning pain 24/7. Even so I know things were not right enough for me to even live any kind of life so I went to Emory Spinal Clinic in Atlanta for surgery to give my spine support. The head surgeon came in after looking at my spine pics and told me that I had "NO FUSION" (from T10 and below to L2-3 to L5-S1) and a metal plate had come out from the front of my spine and was embedded into my abdominal aeorta. That was the next surgery to remove the metal plate w/o killing me ! God took care of me ! I was in body casts after these surgeries. YET I WAS ALIVE !

Anyway, a long story short I ended up with chronic pain getting adhesive arachnoiditis ( this is when scar tissue intertwines w nerves and causes compression on the spinal cord, fibromyalgia, and complex regional pain after getting a second pain pump that sent meds to my back for 8 yrs. The next two surgeries ( I will be 53 now ) that really messed me up cause my blood pressure to spike up after I have been asleep for an hour or so and then it produces the "fight or flight" response ,fear , pounding headaches, sweating, and stomach upset w trembling in the stomach. Has this happened to anyone else ? I have spinal cord compression plus many more problems w spinal cord damage. Have you ever read about autonomic hyperreflexia ? I wonder if this is what makes my blood pressure go up to an extreme amount off & on since 1995. I have read that it can cause a person to have a stroke ! I will be mentioning these symtoms to my neurologist& my pain physician. Please keep me in your thoughts. Does anyone know what this can be ?

May you all have a better day w your pain and do better all in all !
God Bless You,
Denee all

My daughter had scoliosis surgery when she was 16 years old. She is now 42. She recovered very well. She was in a body cast for a few weeks, then a brace for a few months. She was not in pain and the surgery corrected the curvature. I know it's difficult being 16 and having this surgery but after she healed, she was able to do everything. Good Luck

Has anyone ever had "Rhizotomy" burning of the the lumbar nerves to cure pain in the lower back. I have severe pain across my lower back - have had surgery to remove bone spurs - but with current MRI I have compression ans severe encroached bilateral issues with nerve root at L3, L4 and L5. Have gone through all shots, three times now. Any information is appreciated, this has been going on for at least 3 years. rllombrana@gmail.com

Ginger, my husband had fusion surgery over a year ago L5 S1. He was tboned in a car accident and was in horrible pain and thought he had to have surgery and he did what the doc said to do. Now after surgery and therepy 3 days a week he has been diagnosed with FBSS, failed back surgery syndrome. We have reason to believe that the surgery has caused some build up of scar tissue around the surgical site in his lower back which is pinching his nerves and causing pain in his legs and back. The neurostimulator has been suggested as an option to help with pain. At this point he has not been able to work since 6-08 over 2 years this month which is really sad for someone whom is 32. I believe the science behind the neurostimulator can help gets the meds in check and a significant quality of life back. We will start with a 1 week trial to see if it can in fact help, if it does then in about a month he will have an outpatient surgery and have it implanted. Where the device is implanted matters. You don't want the leads to move, that would need more surgery. Try to do your homework with the doc before you have it. Find someone who has had it. The company that makes your device can help you get intouch with people that can help. But if you want as well I will let you know if it works for us! We will have the trial done in a month. I wish you luck!! It sucks but this is not the end of our lives! Have faith!

I fell on some ice walking out of work on March 5th, 2007. This caused my L4 and L5 discs to bulge and impinge both my sciatic nerves down both legs. Since April of 2009 my back got worse and I have been off work for over a year now experiencing severe pain from my lower back down to my two feet like being electrocuted 100 times a day. I finally had a spinal fusion in March 23, 2010 and after 3 days in the hospital and a 6 hour operation, I have been back at home resting mainly in my bed. It seems that I have switched the pain for another type of worst pain post surgery. Where they screwed in 4 screws is numb on my back, my right leg and right foot are partially numb. I am experiencing worst pain in both legs than prior surgery. My large toe feels like I stubbed it so hard that I broke it. Just under 2 months they put me in physiotherapy and after a few sessions my legs were becoming more painful so I was told to wait to talk to my surgeon in a month before doing anymore physio. Daily I am on enough painkillers to keep me out of emergency in a hospital but I didn't get the results I really wanted.
I had my L5 carved down off of the spinal cord and a fake insert from my S1 to L5 with bone to help it fuze. The surgeon put 4 screws in to keep my L5 and S1 in place. After 2 months from my surgery I have not improved. Anyone know what I should do?

GOT OUT OF THE HOSPITAL JUST THIS EVENING FOR A TLIF AT L4-L5. HAD A DISCECTOMY AND LAMINECTOMY HERE FOR RIGHT SIDE PAIN IN'99 THE SAME FOR LEFT SIDE PAIN '09. NOW THIS. THIRD TIMES A CHARM, RIGHT?
So now home after 5 days fairly significant level of pain as expexcted.
My worry is what looks to me like a hematoma roughly the size of a softball centered at the scar.
Any thoughts on mimimization.
Surgeon says no big deal. Girlfriend. an OB/GYN is going nuts telling me I need to have it looked at.
Any thoughts?
